Healthy Skin Series – Rosacea
Did you know April is Rosacea Awareness Month?
What is rosacea and how is it caused?
Rosacea includes symptoms such as persistent redness on the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead. You may notice pimple like bumps and broken capillaries. Rosacea is categorised by the overproduction of capillaries and thinning of the epidermal tissues.
Treatment method for Rosacea:
It is a common misconception that calming and soothing the skin is the best method to treat rosacea. However, the better solution is to rebuild and re-strengthen the skin:
We suggest a skincare home maintenance regimen with specialty serums:
Vitamin A: Vitamin A is a key component for correcting rosacea as it will correct DNA Damage and restore correct cell function. The Skincare Company Vitamin A Serum formulation contains 1% Vitamin A in two powerful derivatives, will help regulate epithelial cell growth and regenerate skin, leading to a more even skin tone and texture.
Vitamin B5 and Hyaluronic Acid: Vitamin B5 has anti-inflammatory properties. It is an essential vitamin that helps promote the skin barriers natural repair process. The Skincare Company Hyaluronic B5 Serum combines hyaluronic acid and Vitamin B5 to provide hydration and promote healing. Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) regulates epidermal barrier function through the proliferation and differentiation of keratinocytes directly or indirectly via the synthesis of keratinocyte growth factor and type IV collagen. Deficiency of pantothenic acid is a causative factor in acne. Topical application improves acne symptoms, increases stratum corneum thickness and increases moisture content even at deep levels of the stratum corneum.
Hyaluronic acid is a key molecule responsible for retaining skin moisture and optimal skin function. High and Low Molecular Weight Hyaluronic acid regulate activation of inflammatory cells and immune response, and provides hydration whilst promoting wound healing and collagen formation. The Skincare Company HB5 serum is very beneficial in the treatment of rosacea, erythema, superficial keratitis, facial seborrheic dermatitis and other inflammatory mediated skin conditions.
Vitamin B3: Vitamin B3 (niacinamide) is one of the most well studied bioactive cosmetic ingredients, and is proven to help restore the natural inflammatory response and avoid the excessive response which is normal in rosacea prone skin. When applied topically, niacinamide has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects on the skin, as it is an essential compound required for optimal skin function including assisting in moisture retention, keratin and ceramide synthesis. We have added other supporting anti-inflammatory ingredients such as methylsulfonylmethane and hydroxytyrosol to The Skincare Company Vitamin B3 serum that have shown benefits in a range of areas including rosacea treatment.
Vitamin C: L-ascorbic acid is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound that is a primary natural antioxidant in the skin. L-ascorbic acid is also an essential cofactor for new collagen production and wound healing. The anti-inflammatory effects of L-ascorbic acid are responsible for its ability to treat rosacea.

The treatment of redness and capillaries due to rosacea is often more rapidly corrected with laser treatments. Some specialty lasers are attracted to oxyhaemoglobin (in blood) and are very effective in shutting down broken facial capillaries and reducing facial redness. Another effective treatment is skin needling. Skin needling breaks down the excess capillary networks and due to the release of VEGf (a protein the body makes that promotes blood vessel growth) and PDGf (a growth factor that regulates cell growth and division), manages the correct production of new capillaries.
